Course Offered: Bachelor of Elementary Education (B.El.Ed.)
The Bachelor of Elementary Education (B.El.Ed.) Course is a four-year integrated professional programme of elementary teacher education aimed at fulfilling the need for professionally qualified elementary school teachers. It aims at redefining the social function of the school teacher in the context of achieving universalization of Elementary Education besides focusing on developing a deep critical understanding of the curriculum and pedagogy in teachers, who are believed to perform a transformative role in school education.
Following a truly multi-disciplinary approach, the curriculum of this programme amalgamates the undergraduate studies in various disciplines with the educational theories and pedagogical experience in a phased manner. The bilingual nature of the programme posits construction of knowledge as a free process beyond linguistic barriers. Heterogeneity in the student population contributes to the richness and vastness of the identities and experiences of the students and facilitates knowledge acquisition through dialogic reflection. The teaching- learning situations are rooted in real life experiences, experiments and ongoing reflections. A culture of critical inquiry and constant engagement with the real educational setups, whether it is community or schools, is the highlight of our teacher education discourse. Taking cognizance of a truly multi-disciplinary approach, the B.El.Ed programme offers close integration of theory as well as practicum courses enhancing content knowledge, pedagogical understanding and communication skills of the students through various innovative practices embedded in the programme as part of the curriculum including Performing and Fine Arts, Crafts, Physical Education and Alternative School Visits.
The Department draws faculty members from diverse disciplines who are equipped with skills that break the boundaries of their parent disciplines to incorporate the pedagogy and praxis of education. The B.El.Ed. degree opens up a wide range of professional and academic options such as teaching in schools, heading elementary school systems in various capacities and teaching and research in government and non-government sectors or pursuing higher education. At LSR, we also use B.El.Ed. as an acronym for ‘Building Leaders in Education’.
Learning Beyond Classroom
Being a student in the Department is about exploring one’s talents, ambitions and creativity, experimenting with one’s capabilities and dabbling in the joy of realizing one’s potential. The department association regularly organises talks and workshops with experts from the field on various themes.
Department Association Activities
The academic year 2024-25 was a dynamic and enriching journey filled with intellectual discussions, professional development initiatives, and experiential learning opportunities. From Insightful interactive sessions and engaging field visits, each event contributed to a holistic learning experience for the students.
The first event of the session, Orientation Day, served as a welcoming platform for new students, offering them insights into the department’s academic framework, values, and the array of opportunities that lay ahead. The Alumnae Meet 2024-25 brought together esteemed graduates who have made significant contributions and with experience in renowned institutions such as Kendriya Vidyalayas, international schools, and progressive educational spaces. Their insights provided students with a deeper understanding of diverse career possibilities, inspiring them to navigate their own professional journeys with confidence and purpose. The department’s commitment to experiential learning was reflected in the Innovative School Visit to Digantar, Jaipur in December 2024, where third-year B.El.Ed. students explored alternative educational models. Observing and engaging with Digantar’s child-centered and innovative pedagogy provided invaluable insights into how non-traditional learning methodologies can shape student development.
A strong focus on career preparation and skill-building was evident throughout the year through a series of placement-focused sessions for 4th year students of the Department. Ms. Heemal Handoo Bhat, Principal of Hansraj Model School, shared insights on Preparing for School Interviews, emphasizing the importance of multilingualism, inclusivity, and strategic career planning. Interactive sessions by esteemed educators played a crucial role in broadening students’ perspectives. Dr. Ramesh Bijlani, a renowned scholar deeply influenced by Sri Aurobindo’s philosophy of Integral Education, conducted an insightful session titled School Education: As It Could Be, As It Should Be. His discussion encouraged students to view education as a transformative journey that integrates physical, mental, and spiritual growth. Drawing inspiration from Aurobindo’s vision, he emphasized the need for an education system that nurtures the holistic development of an individual rather than focusing solely on academic achievements.
Engaging competitions enriched student learning experiences. The Crossword Contest, held in collaboration with Extra C, challenged students’ critical thinking skills under the guidance of experts like Mr. Vivek Kumar Singh and Mr. Amrit Lugun.
The most anticipated event of the year, SEHAR 2025, the National Seminar on Harnessing the Power of AI in Education, held on March 28-29, 2025, brought together educators, students, and experts to explore the role of AI in transforming school education. The seminar commenced with an insightful keynote address by Prof. K. Srinivas, Head, ICT at NIEPA, on AI in School Education, emphasizing how AI-driven tools can revolutionize teaching. This was followed by a session with Ms. Deepti Sawhney, CEO, Mahattatva, on Reimagining Teaching with AI, shedding light on AI’s role in personalized learning and assessment while addressing ethical concerns. Later, Dr. Rejaul Karim Barbhuiya from CIET, NCERT, conducted a hands-on workshop on AI for Smarter Teaching, offering practical insights into AI-enhanced lesson planning. The following day, Dr. Aarti Chopra from Poornima University, Jaipur, led a discussion on AI as an Ally: Empowering Personality without Losing Self, emphasizing the importance of maintaining creativity and individuality while embracing AI-driven advancements. The seminar also incorporated engaging activities, ensuring a balance between educational discussions and interactive participation.
A major highlight of the seminar was a play written and performed by students of the department titled A Glimpse into AI’s Impact on Education. This play presented a crucial question: Can AI truly revolutionise education, or does it risk making learning mechanical and impersonal? Through a compelling narrative and powerful performances, the play left us with a clear message — education must evolve, not just with technology, but with a focus on creativity, individuality and emotional well being.
The academic year 2024-25 was a testament to the department’s dedication to fostering a well-rounded educational experience. Throughout the year, a range of interactive sessions, talks, and celebratory events were organized to foster intellectual growth and holistic development. From thought-provoking discussions on educational advancements to engaging activities that encouraged creativity and collaboration within the department, each initiative aimed to enrich student learning while nurturing a vibrant and inclusive academic community.
The students of the B.El.Ed department had a series of informal events that brought excitement, creativity, and a strong sense of community. From spontaneous jamming sessions where melodies filled the air to energetic flashmobs that turned ordinary days into celebrations, every moment was a testament to the enthusiasm of our students. The Halloween treasure hunt on 22nd October 2024 had everyone on their toes, solving clues and embracing the festive spirit with unique costumes and face paintings.
On 15th August 2025, we hosted an online documentary screening focused on Independence Day, reflecting on its significance and relevance today. The Reading Circle, introduced on 17th October 2025, encouraged thought-provoking discussions on inclusion, accompanied by a symbolic hand-printing activity representing unity and belonging, while the formation of the Accessibility Team further strengthened our commitment to ensuring that every student felt valued and included.
Children’s Day on 14th November 2024 was celebrated with great enthusiasm as we collaborated with Chehel to organize an Obstacle Race with the children, making it a truly memorable and engaging experience. The excitement continued with an online Resume Building Workshop on 29th December 2025, equipping students with essential skills for their professional growth. The Crossword Competition on 18th February 2025 challenged minds, blending learning with friendly competition, and the Women’s Day celebration on 7th March 2025 brought insightful conversations through a movie screening and discussion.
Each of these events was more than just an activity; they were moments of shared joy, connection, and unforgettable experiences. The Department held its annual academic meet ‘SEHAR’ on 15 and 16 February 2018. The two-day event focused on the theme ‘Taking Science Beyond the Classroom’. Learning science forms the foundation of education in our society and is an integral part of a child’s learning and understanding of the world around her. The academic meet emphasized the fact that the teaching of science cannot be limited to the classroom. Instead, it needs to be linked to the lived experiences of children. In fact learning science requires a hands – on engagement with everyday materials and objects and it cannot be learnt merely by looking at pictures and diagrams in textbooks. The need to develop a scientific temper in children was an important part of the discourse of the meet. Some of the best scientific minds were invited to deliberate on these issues including Professor Dhruv Raina of Zakir Husain Centre for Educational Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Dr. Nandiwada Rathnasree, Director, Nehru Planetarium, New Delhi and Dr. T. V Venkateshwaran of Vigyan Prasar, Department of Science and Technology. The high point of the academic meet was the active participation of about 80 students and some faculty members from B.El.Ed colleges across Delhi University.
