Discipline and the Department:

Sociology is the most contemporary and versatile of the Social Sciences. It trains students to grasp social structures, understand social processes, map the dynamics of social change, decipher social interactions and make sense of individual and collective experiences in their social, historical and cultural contexts. Sociology is at once critical and constructive; conceptual and applied; theoretical and empirical. It is a science that cohabits comfortably with literary flair, speculative sensibility, historical imagination and statistical rigour. It is incessantly reflexive about its methods, exacting about its research techniques and standards of evidence. Sociology is ever so subtle about the conceptual distinctions it draws and ardent about its disciplinary boundaries and identity. At the same time, Sociology is the most open and interdisciplinary of social sciences. The pursuit of Sociology is a systematic effort at recovering, mapping and making sense of our kaleidoscopic collective self under the sign of modernity. It is both historical and comparative. Sociology as an academic discipline is committed to the ideal of generating public knowledge and fostering public reason. It embodies the best of enlightenment virtues: scientific reason, tolerance of diversity, humanistic empathy and celebration of democratic ideals. It is the science of our times.

The Department of Sociology at LSR is three decades old. From its inception in 1993 it carved a niche for itself among the undergraduate Sociology departments in the university.  It is known for its rigorous teaching and learning process; unflinching fidelity to disciplinary ethos, careful mentoring, extensive use of multimedia resources in the pedagogic process. It has a vibrant student body that is interactive, creative and engaged. The department is committed to learning through doing and learning as an act of dialogue. The academic calendar is dotted with a range of formal and informal activities that will keep up the excitement of learning.  Students are encouraged to participate in the academic and cultural life of the university and the city.  A key component of the department’s pedagogic practice is its emphasis on fieldwork. The department has the singular distinction of the entire third year class going for a two-week annual field trip accompanied by faculty.  For students, this fieldwork provides an opportunity to connect and test the concepts, theories and methods acquired in the classroom in an empirical context. The department is at the top of the university results consistently on multiple parameters. The department believes in the holistic development of student’s competencies and critical faculties. It endeavours to equip them to take on wide-ranging career paths upon graduating, it supports them through the process.

Scope and Careers:

Graduates are well equipped to mobilize their sociological knowledge and generic skills for a variety of purposes apart from an academic pursuit of the discipline. Sociology graduates are equipped to grasp vast quantities of diversely textured complex material and synthesise it into coherent and cogent arguments backed by evidence. It's room practices inculcate an ability to engage in collaborative and interdisciplinary work, and participate in constructive, purposive and democratic conversations. They are well trained for critical thinking that matches their research skills which enables them to evaluate strengths and weaknesses of arguments in a scientific fashion.

Sociology is a worldly science that incessantly draws students beyond class rooms and harnesses the productive tension between library work, field work and a call to interventionist action. A Sociology graduate is ideal for employment needs where a graduate from liberal arts would fit in for this rare blend. They are a perfect fit for the areas (but not limited to them alone) such as law, Journalism, development studies, development practice, social work, bureaucracy and public institutions, women’s studies, gender studies, area studies, international relations, policy studies, policy implementation, advocacy, management, marketing, social psychology, industry organization, election studies, data sciences, criminology, and careers in fine and performing arts.

Sociology is both a profession and a vocation. A lifelong commitment to learning, critical thinking and to the cause of the collective well-being rather than narcissistic self-indulgence. It is a cosmopolitan science that is positive and normative at once. It makes one an enlightened leader and an informed follower. Finally, the chief attribute of a Sociology graduate is that they are well prepared in discharging their responsibilities as a conscious citizen while having a productive career and leading a meaningful life.

As an institution, LSR does not encourage statisticians to merely manipulate or interpret data but allows them space for creativity and innovative visionary practice. Statistics is not just a game of numbers or only numerical data. The LSR faculty ensures that it is not enough to just teach but more importantly to inculcate a passion for the learning process. An extra effort on their part helps the young scholars to face the challenges of the world with a sharp mind and in-depth knowledge. Young minds are nurtured to explore possibilities in the outside world, whether to help big corporate balance their & balance sheet or to assist industries in acquisition decisions or more so, to help the government make the country a better place to live in. At LSR, the Statistics Department raises the bar effortlessly. Beginning with annual surveys conducted by the Department to releasing its annual newsletter, this relatively small cohort of faculty and students impacts the space around it significantly. Within the friendly environs that foster a mélange of the Arts and Sciences, it often happens that each stream finds itself sharing ideas with another. When applying

Statistics finds itself being drawn into the realm of Psychology. Similarly, when computing an efficient model to fit consumption data based on a fixed set of variables, the statistical methods of correlation and regression are imperative to the theory of Econometrics. A similar encouragement of interdisciplinary dialogue among students may thus be seen as an opportunity that would give impetus to the discovery of novel thoughts and ideas. In today's dynamic environment, it is innovation and a multi-dimensional thought process that allows for path breaking developments.

Our Department regularly conducts presentations and invites faculty members from across reputed institutes to lecture our students on trending subjects. The theories decoded and imparted during these events serve in overcoming the initial hesitation students face when considering research as a career option. Talks, panel discussions, and interactive sessions with experts are regular feature at the Department on themes such as careers in statistics, the use of statistics in the formulation of economic policies, and Stochastic Modelling. Eminent visitors to the department have included Prof. Chand Midha, Head of the department, University of Akron, U.S.A., Prof. K.R. Parthasarathy from the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), and eminent professor from ISI, Prof. B. Majumdar. Field trips are also organised. The department organised an educational trip to the National Academy of Statistical Administration (NASA), Greater NOIDA. NASA functions under the overall guidance of the nation’s premier statistical organisation – the Central Statistics Office (CSO). Another educational trip was organised to the Huber-Suhner plant in Manesar. This visit helped students gain insight into the various aspects of Statistical Quality Control.

The department has been holding its Annual Meet Moments since 1995 with the aim of introducing students to the importance of organisational abilities. Participation by students from other disciplines is encouraged. Moments has emerged as a popular and eagerly awaited event and involves activities such as crosswords, quizzes, and Pictionary. Public speaking and theatre based activities are also conducted. Beyond an undergraduate degree, these newer developments offer students multifarious career possibilities. As confident, well-equipped statisticians with a broader outlook on the world, we can reach out and achieve a lot more than envisioned by our predecessors. There is no doubt that Statistics is the backbone of all ongoing industrial and technical development.  Statistics is the science of data analysis and data is ubiquitous, prolific, and an invaluable tool for decoding the world that we inhabit inferring this data is impossible without the discipline of Statistics. After graduation, various career options available to students include working on quality control for industries, biotechnology, market research, corporate planning, banking, trade, medicine, defence, consultation, analysts, data analysis and data science.

The Bachelor of Elementary Education (B.El.Ed) is a four-year integrated teacher education programme aimed at fulfilling the need for professionally qualified elementary school teachers. It was introduced in Lady Shri Ram College for Women in the year 1998. Envisaged on the belief that quality elementary teacher education can bring the much desired changes in school education, the programme links the elementary school education system with the university system. It aims at redefining the social function of the school teacher in the context of achieving Universalization of Elementary Education. Its primary focus is developing a deep critical understanding of the curriculum and pedagogy in teachers, who are believed to perform a transformative role in school education. Following a truly multi-disciplinary approach, the B.El.Ed curriculum amalgamates the undergraduate studies in various disciplines with the educational theories and pedagogical experience in a phased manner. The programme offers a unique combination of liberal and professional education, preparing students not only for becoming teachers, but also equips them with the necessary background to pursue higher education. Its bilingual nature posits construction of knowledge as a free process beyond linguistic barriers. Heterogeneity in the student population as well as faculty contributes to the richness and vastness of the identities and experiences of the students and facilitates knowledge acquisition through dialogic reflection. The endeavour of the Department of Elementary Education at LSR has always been to contribute to the strengthening of the epistemological basis of Teacher Education through a continuous engagement with the discipline. Through this programme, LSR, a premier institution in social sciences, provides a platform to prospective teachers to forge relationships with and between subject matter and the varied educational contexts.

The B.El.Ed. programme integrates the study of subject knowledge and pedagogical knowledge through theory and practicum courses. The programme offers compulsory and optional theory courses as well as practicum courses and colloquia. Students are expected to study nineteen theory courses during the programme of study. These are divided into four categories. Foundation courses are designed to offer an in-depth study of human development and learning focusing on how education is influenced by the historical, social, political and cultural contexts. Core courses prompt the student-teacher to reconstruct concepts learnt in school and to integrate them within multi-disciplinary perspectives. Liberal courses offer studies in specific disciplines with academic rigour. They are designed to enrich the knowledge base to allow for further study in the discipline and in the pedagogy in which students opt to specialize. Pedagogy courses provide a study of pedagogical theory with the aim to develop skills required for teaching young children and also learn methodologies related to specific knowledge areas. The practicum and colloquia are designed to allow a variety of experiences with children within and outside elementary schools and provide opportunities for self-reflection and development. Students acquire a wide range of professional skills including drama, craft, developing curricular material, systematic observations and classroom management. Colloquia is structured to include concerted activity on children’s literature, storytelling, organizing teaching-learning resource centers and sharing school experiences.

The interdisciplinarity of the programme gets enhanced due to specialization of the faculty in varied disciplines ranging from gender studies, teacher education, mathematics education, science and environment education, language education and linguistics, sociology, psychology, and child development. The department is led by a vibrant faculty with diverse research interests who engage in scholarly activities on a regular basis by delivering talks, conducting workshops and publishing in national as well as international journals.
