The Department of Mathematics at Lady Shri Ram College for Women is inspired by the belief that mathematics is a fascinating and enjoyable subject. The department’s pedagogical practices are designed to create a stimulating and supportive environment for students to explore the world of mathematics. The department believes that mathematics is an important subject with a rich history.The intradisciplinary holistic approach to mathematics education undertaken by the department emphasises the interconnectedness of mathematical concepts and the importance of understanding mathematics in a real-world context. The department’s mission is to inspire, prepare, and empower students to succeed in the ever-changing world. The department strives to offer a rich mathematical experience that teaches students to think critically and  communicate mathematical concepts effectively.

The department’s faculty use a variety of teaching methods to engage students and encourage them to explore the subject. These methods include discussions, application-based examples and various softwares.Tutorials are held regularly to address student queries and doubts. With the introduction of the New Education Policy, the department now offers a plethora of subjects for students to choose from, which includes subjects that help them stay updated with the current skill sets demanded by the marketplace. The department also encourages students to think outside the box and tackle real-world problems.

Graduates of the Department of Mathematics at Lady Shri Ram College for Women have a wide variety of career options available to them. These include academics, research, civil services, actuarial sciences, data analysis, operations analysis, project development, investment sciences, space dynamics, law, management, banking, defence operations, and entrepreneurship. BlackRock, the largest asset management firm in the world visits the Department every year for their Hallac Scholarship and Internship Program and offers students Scholarship and Internship with a FinTech firm opportunities.

The year was abuzz with events for the Mathematics Department, exemplifying the department’s commitment to academic excellence and community, enhancing both the intellectual and cultural environment of LSR. The year was a testament to the collaborative efforts and spirited participation of both faculty and students, contributing significantly to the department’s legacy of excellence.

Enigma, the Mathematics Department’s Annual Academic Meet was held in April and successfully embodied its theme, ‘Zenith- Reaching the Pinnacle of Success’. The event began with engaging preevents like ‘Coffee with Cauchy’ and captivating flash mobs. The inaugural ceremony featured diverse cultural performances, including bhangra and garba, celebrating rich traditions alongside academic pursuits. The event featured a lecture by Dr. Pooja Saigal, who detailed the mathematics behind machine learning, focusing on algorithms like Support Vector Machines that are pivotal in modern industries. Another highlight was the speaker session by Nisha Awasthi, who emphasized the importance of lifelong learning and continual knowledge acquisition. Dr. Niteesh Sahni presented his research on integrating machine learning with topological data analysis to enhance deep learning models, offering attendees insights into cutting-edge technological advancements. Additional sessions included talks by entrepreneurs Chirag Gupta, Natwar Agrawal, and Nishant Sinha, who shared their experiences and the highs and lows of their journeys providing vital insights into entrepreneurship for the students. The event also featured popular games like ‘SherlockedTomber en ruine’, ‘Mathscape’ and ‘SoD- Solve or Dissolve’ all of which saw enthusiastic participation.


The Mathematics Department hosted several insightful sessions throughout the academic year, leveraging its strong alumni network and distinguished speakers to enhance student learning and career development. The series began with Dr. Rajenki Das discussing research methodologies in September, followed by Dr. Sruthi Sekar sharing her journey of pursuing a master’s in mathematics from top institutions in October. Shubhi Arora, conducted a workshop to delve into case studies, boosting analytical skills. Lipika Parekh spoke about the logistics of studying Mathematics abroad, emphasizing financial management and balancing work with study. Further sessions included oncampus and off-campus internship guidance by Sruthi Iyer, Prakriti Malik, and Vanshika Gupta, all third-year department students, offering tips on navigating aptitude tests, and interviews, and gaining valuable work experience. Dr. Harish Sahu introduced students to Cryptography blending theoretical knowledge with practical applications in cyber security.

In November and January, sessions covered analytics careers, by Rajat Tomar, internships in government sectors by Mani Devi and Hritika Meena (third-year students at the department), UPSC preparation by alumna Shireen Prakash (IRS officer), and the realities of life post-UPSC by Mr. Surya Pratap Singh (IAS officer). The department organised a guest lecture on the Mathematics behind Machine Learning by Dr. Reshma Rastogi underscoring the diverse applications of mathematics in various fields. Throughout the year, the Mathematics Department at LSR hosted several noteworthy events. The celebrations began with a vibrant Teachers Day where students and faculty dressed in retro attire and engaged in festivities like musical chairs. This was followed by a spirited Freshers event themed ‘Devilish or Angelic’ welcoming the class of 2027 with creative costumes and decorations. The department also organised the prestigious ‘Delta’ competition in February 2024, aligning with the Viksit Bharat 2047 initiative. It featured rounds addressing societal issues through innovative solutions. The prestigious annual ‘Anupama Dua Paper Presentation and Scholarship Programme’ was also held in February, highlighting scholarly work and offering scholarships in mathematics. Pi Day was celebrated on March 14, 2024, with mathematical quizzes, fostering engagement and fun among students.


Éclat is the research journal of the Mathematics opportunity to research at the undergraduate level. This year, the journal’s 15th volume was published in both print and electronic format. The range of wellresearched papers included topics like Infinite Knowledge of Mobius strip, Visualizing the basins of attraction of the roots of complex polynomials, Krull’s theorem, Family of Finite Difference Methods to Solve First Order Initial Value Problem, queuing model for traffic signal control, Mathematical model for analysis of Hussain Sagar lake’s water pollution, to name a few. Besides this, the students interviewed Padmashree awardee Dr Sujatha Ramdorai who won the prestigious ICTP Ramanujan Prize in 2006. The students were ably guided by the learned faculty in their research endeavours. Quantum- the Annual Newsletter of the Department of Mathematics, highlighted the significant advancements made by the department over the past year. It includes submissions in various forms, including art, poetry, movie/book reviews, riddles, memes, and other creative expressions.

Journal Éclat
The journey of the academic journal of the Department of Mathematics began with ‘Terminus A Quo‘. This review began as an attempt to investigate and pore over various dimensions of Mathematics through student-written articles. Volume 1 of the journal was published in 2004.

‘Terminus A Quo’ was revived into Éclat in the year 2009. The journal created a platform for students who wished to publish their ideas and also other concepts they may have come across. In an attempt to present diverse concepts, the journal was divided into four sections – History of Mathematics, Rigour in Mathematics, Extension of Course Content and Interdisciplinary Aspects of Mathematics.

The work contained in this journal is not original but consists of review articles written by both students and faculty members outside or from within the college. The compilation evolves as a result of continuous research, discussion and counsel of the faculty. Over the years, the journal has encouraged students to hone their skills in undertaking individual research and writing academic papers. It has given students the opportunity to delve into various areas beyond the prescribed limits of the text and to broaden their knowledge of the subject.

Éclat was first published in the year 2010. Ever since then, this initiative of the Department of Mathematics gives students the unique experience of what research at the undergraduate level looks like. The journal, which was only an idea a decade ago, is now an integral part of the Department of Mathematics.

Newsletter Quantum
Quantum meaning ‘a significant change’ in Latin, is the annual newsletter of the Department of Mathematics, LSR. The newsletter was instituted in 2007-08, and was christened Chrysalis.

It was envisioned as a channel of creative expression for the Department. Further, it strived to provide a snapshot of Department activities.

Over the years, poetically, the newsletter underwent true chrysalis, and was renamed Quantum in 2009. Beyond this, Quantum has emerged as a binding force in the department, and today, encompasses various forms of student expression such as poems, articles and reflections.

It also documents student and faculty achievements, thereby serving as the Department’s ‘Hall of Fame’.

In 2018, quarterly digital editions of Quantum were instituted to provide more space and opportunity to students to publish their diverse ideas.
