Understanding people with Neuro-divergent conditions and the need for their inclusion in society

On Thursday, 18th April, the National Service Scheme, Lady Shri Ram College for Women organized a speaker session at Room 103 during the ECA Period. The session featured Dr. Shanti Auluck, Chairperson, and one of the founding members of Muskaan, an NGO dedicated to improving the lives of intellectually challenged individuals and their families. It saw active participation from enthusiastic volunteers of all 27 NSS projects.

The session commenced with Dr. Auluck comprehensively elaborating on the meaning of neurodivergent conditions and their implications on the individual and their family. She proceeded with an insightful discussion on various neurodivergent conditions, including
Autism Spectrum Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, Intellectual Disabilities, Sensory Processing Disorders, and various others. She emphasised the need for enhanced understanding of disabilities and diversity, stressing that
individuals with neurodivergent conditions have similar emotional needs for achievement, appreciation, and bonding with others as those without such challenges.

A significant part of the session was dedicated to discussing the issues related to mainstream employment for intellectually challenged individuals. One of the key topics of discussion was the challenges faced by intellectually challenged individuals, including issues related to mainstream employment, self-esteem, social development, and differences in opportunities. Dr. Auluck emphasized the importance of creating inclusive work environments and providing support to intellectually challenged individuals. She also delved into her personal
experiences with Muskaan and working for people with intellectual disabilities, how it has transformed her life and given her a sense of meaning and fulfilment.

The session also included a screening of a short film featuring individuals from Muskaan, providing a glimpse into their lives and showcasing the impactful work done by the NGO. Dr. Auluck’s narrative style was engaging as she shared anecdotes and stories to highlight the importance of empathy and inclusion. She emphasized the need for society to approach intellectually challenged individuals with sensitivity and understanding.

The session provided valuable perspectives on the challenges faced by intellectually challenged individuals and underscored the importance of support and inclusion in our society. Overall, it was an enlightening and enriching experience, leaving the audience with a deeper understanding of disability issues and a renewed commitment to fostering a more inclusive society
