Course Offered: B.A (Honours) Sanskrit
Established in 1956, the Department of Sanskrit at LSR promotes the appreciation of this rich and scientific language, crucial to the understanding of several Indian cultural, philosophical and religious traditions. The thrust areas of the course are Vedic and Upanishadic lore, history of ancient Indian cultures, philosophy, Arthashastra and other areas of Indology.
The course places emphasis on specific aspects of India’s intellectual traditions which are relevant to contemporary discourses in diverse disciplines both in the humanities and sciences. Short modules on linguistics and philosophy of language, reasoning and ontology, aesthetics and Indian theatre, mathematics and Astronomy and Indian science have been introduced. The faculty approaches the study of Sanskrit not merely as a language but as a subject that sensitizes students to its role as a repository of Indian culture, ethical values and Vedic mathematics. Faculty members also encourage fluency in speaking the language. Students of the Sanskrit Department study epigraphy and archaeology and hence are eligible to pursue a Masters Degree in this field. Students of Sanskrit are in demand in museums, manuscript studies and fields related to archaeology. Other career options include teaching and translation work.
The learning of students is enriched in various ways through a number of educational activities conducted within and outside the Department. The department of Sanskrit has always been proactive and has invited eminent scholars to disseminate their knowledge and their expertise. Seminars on Vedic Mathematics, Kinship and Social Justice in Ancient Hindu Legal System, panel discussions and talks on Archaeology and Sanskrit are some of the popular and memorable ones. The Sanskrit Sambhashan Shivir from Lok Bhasha Prachar Samity is organized at regular intervals.
The department academic conference Sanskriti 2024 was held in April. It was a two day event in which various programmes were organised by the Sanskrit Department. On the first day, a panel discussion on the topic ‘Indian New Year – History, Importance and Relevance’ was conducted. The esteemed speakers for the same were Dr. Punita Sharma and Dr. Saurabh Ji. They delivered insightful and interesting lectures on the above topic. The students learned many new concepts and gained valuable exposure about the significance of celebrating Indian New Year. On the second day, various inter-college competitions were organised– Sanskrit Quiz, Shlok Shabd Sangam and Sanskrit Debate. Students from various colleges of
Delhi University enthusiastically participated in these competitions. Apart from the competitions, cultural activities were also held, such as dancing and singing.
A lecture by Dr. Shiksha Deepak, on the topic ‘Explorations into Experiences of Love in Young Adults’ was organised in October. Another lecture session was conducted by Mr. Shashank Tripathi, IAS, regarding UPSC preparation while taking Sanskrit as an optional subject. In this program, many students from other departments also participated. Both the sessions were informative and enhanced the knowledge of students in the respective areas.
On the occasion of Environment Week celebration, students decorated 3 trees with the theme ‘Women Nurturing Nature – A Celebration of Synergy and Sustainability’. The untold efforts of women working towards sustainability and conservation in different states, such as Rajasthan, Haryana and Nagaland, were displayed through posters. The posters were made of recycled and eco-friendly material. The inspection committee, also the faculty and students of LSR were highly impressed and appreciated the work done by the Sanskrit department.
Under the theme of Viksit Bharat @2047 the Sanskrit Department held two competitions – Poster Making Competition on ‘Addiction Free Youth: A Strong Foundation for Viksit Bharat’ and Paper Presentation Competition on the topic ‘Concept of Public Welfare in Sanskrit Literature: Present Perspective’. Students from other departments also participated in both events.
In the academic session the department of Sanskrit conducted inter-class competitions. These included Shlokavritti, Prose Reading, Sanskrit Speech, and Sketching Competition. These competitions were held to encourage students for building stage confidence and making their language skills stronger.
Throughout the academic session, students of the department participated in various competitions organised by different institutes of Delhi University. Many of them won prizes in Sanskrit Quiz, Shlokavritti, Sanskrit Speech, and Sketching competitions.
The Annual Academic Journal Tejas and Annual Newsletter Sampreshika were also published which showcased research papers by students.
