Highlights of the Academic Year 2018-19

  • Politics, Power and Media: Ms. Mridula Garg was invited to deliver the fourth Manohar Shyam Joshi Memorial lecture on 9th August 2018. Her talk was titled ‘Manohar Shyam Joshi: Woh Jo Khud Doosra Tha’.  Ms. Garg stressed on Shri Joshi’s acumen as an author, his approach to his work and his personality.
  • Sexual Harassment Awareness: On 13 September, 2018, ACP Ms. Sunita Sharma (first SHO at the first woman managed police station in India) spoke on sexual harassment. She elaborated on the definition of sexual harassment as per the Sexual Harassment at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013. Further she highlighted various Sections in the IPC under which complaints can be registered. She explained the role of an Internal Complaints Committee in redressal of sexual harassment at the workplace and in higher educational institutions.
  • Visit by International Students: Students from the Faculty of Arts at Macquarie University, Australia along with Professor Andrew Alter visited Lady Shri Ram College for a short-term course conceptualized and transacted by LSR faculty members. This week long course, held in September 2018, provided an overview on diverse aspects of Indian History, Geopolitics, Sociology, Gandhi and his relevance and Sustainable Environmental Practices in India.
  • Talks by Professors from Foreign Universities: Dr. Kirsten Davies from Macquarie’s Department of Law visited LSR on October 3, 2018 to deliver a lecture titled “The Warming War: How Climate Change is Creating Threats to International Peace and Security”. This lecture highlighted the impact of greenhouse emissions in accelerating climate change, insidiously threatening the security of human life on earth. On 4th October, 2018 Dr. Peter Postle, HOD of Economics at the University of Bath gave a lecture on Global responsibilities from the market to the individual”.
  • Winter School: An eight day long winter school, organized by the University of Bath titled ‘Global Responsibilities from the Market to the Individual’ was held in December 2018. The course was open to all undergraduate students and was inter-disciplinary in nature. Taught by faculty from the University of Bath, it included specialists from the disciplines of economics, philosophy, history and political science.
  • Workshop with women inmates, Tihar Jail: National Service Scheme, LSR and Basta: Waste to Worth conducted two modules – Paper Recycling and Clutch-Making- with the women inmates of Tihar Jail in December- January to provide them with a creative outlet and simultaneously equipping them with vocational skills for socio-economic sustenance post completion of their respective terms.
  • Foreign delegation at LSR: A delegation from Sciences Po visited the College in December 2018. It was led by Dr. Vanessa Scherrer, Vice President, Sciences Po and included Mr. Enrico Letta, Dean of the Paris School of International Affairs and former Prime Minister of Italy and the representatives of Sciences Po in India, Ms. Sophie Collet and Ms. Neha Khanna. Mr. Enrico Letta gave an extremely thought provoking lecture on Nation Building in Europea Comparison with Asia”which was followed by a stimulating discussion with students. .
  • Innovation Cell (MHRD) at LSR: On 8 January 2019 the Innovation Council, an initiative of MHRD,  was formally inaugurated in the college auditorium in the presence of an audience of administrative staff, college faculty and the student body.
  • Summer courses opportunities for LSR students: Mr. Danny Pan, Associate Manager, Academic Partnerships, the Summer Institute at Oriel College, Oxford and the Cambridge Summer Institute visited the campus on 16th January, 2019 to inform students about summer courses at the universities of Oxford and Cambridge.
  • Rabab Recital: Organized as a Pre-Tarang event date in February 2019  in collaboration with the Indira Gandhi National Center for the Arts. Shri Abdul Hamid Bhat and his group from Jammu and Kashmir performed a mesmerising Rabab Recital and enthralled the audience.
  • Women and Law: A Short Term Certificate Course was organized from 5th February 2019 to 26th March 2019. The course covered laws encompassing major areas-Women and Employment; Crimes against Women, Women and Marriage, Divorce and Succession, Adoption and Succession. The Course included a visit to a Family Court as well.
  • A Journey of Grit: Organized on the 6th of March, 2019, TARINI, a National Geographic production, documenting the first ever circumnavigation of the globe by six women officers of the Indian Navy was screened on the occasion of Women’s Day. The Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral Lamba was the Guest of Honour. The screening of the film was followed by an interactive session with the inspiring crew of TARINI.
  • National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF): NIRF  is a methodology adopted by the  MHRD, Government of India, to rank institutions of higher education in India. The parameters broadly cover “Teaching, Learning and Resources,” “Research and Professional Practices,” “Graduation Outcomes,” “Outreach and Inclusivity,” and “Perception”. Lady Shri Ram has been fifth in the rankings of 2018-19, a three-position gain from last year. The WEEK 2018 survey ranked LSR as the number one in the country.
  • Demonstration on Self Defence by Special Police Unit for Women and Child Cell:  During this event students were taught a variety of self-defence techniques. These techniques were enacted in different situations, and were also demonstrated in slow motion. The event ended with the Student Members of ICC addressing the student body about the role of the ICC in LSR, and the various ways and situations in which they can reach out to us if they ever face sexual harassment (of any form).
  • Visits by foreign delegates: A number of visitors, both from partner institutions and from institutions looking for partners in India, visited the college and met the Principal. Dr. Jennifer Grafton, Associate Dean (Global Engagement), from the University of Melbourne discussed possibilities of collaboration between LSR and the University of Melbourne. Dr. Lia Roberts, Academic Director, Centre for Global Initiatives, Mount Saint Mary’s University also discussed possible areas of collaboration. Ms. Amanda Stuart and Ms. Cindy Chen from the Summer Institutes of Oxford and Cambridge visited  LSR to discuss the possibilities for students from LSR participating in summer courses at these Universities.
  • Student Exchanges: LSR College hosted a number of exchange students in the academic year 2018-19. These included six students from Middlebury College, and two students from the National University of Singapore (NUS). While some of the exchange students came for one semester others came on a year-long exchange. A number of students from LSR have been nominated for collaborative programmes in Universities abroad including the Sciences Po Programme in Paris, Macquarie University, Australia, Summer School at NUS and  Fukuoka University, Japan.
  • MOU: Monash University signed an MoU with LSR for a special scholarship called the “Meenakshi Gopinath and Ann Tickner Scholarship”. This scholarship, is primarily meant for students from LSR wanting to do their Ph.D at Monash Univeristy, Faculty of Arts.
  • Social initiatives: Enactus organized a health camp in Mangar village, where one of its communities reside, in collaboration with Paras hospitals to provide free health check up and distribute free medicines. Further, Enactus collaborated with East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) and installed vertical gardens in a municipal court in Yamuna Vihar and a chest clinic in Patparganj. Enactus members further painted two walls in East Delhi, as instructed by the EDMC, to send across a social message to the public to adopt ways to reduce pollution.
  • UXTAPOSE: Annual Academic Meet of the Department of Journalism. Held on the 27th and 28th of September 2018. The meet aimed at deliberating and bringing on stage the issues concerning society and the media. Revolved around the theme- ‘On Battlefield: Death or Rebirth of Media?’ and the events spread over two days addressed areas of censorship, film journalism, fake news, changing patterns of films, ownership and media trial.
  • COMQUEST: Annual Academic Meet of the Department of Commerce. Organized on October 4th and 5th, 2018 the meet revolved around the topic ‘The Alphabet of Numbers’. Provided a forum for exchange of ideas amongst the brightest students in the country and to foster innovation, encourage change, and discuss the latest developments in the ever-buzzing corporate world.
  • ENIGMA: The Department of Mathematics’ annual academic meet organized on the 11th and 12th of January 2019. Events held included a panel discussion on ‘Lifting the Veil of Social Conditioning Against Mathematics’, a quiz and treasure hunt, and various competitive events. Students from several colleges and of Bluebells School International also attended the event.
  • ECONVISTA: International Economics’ Students’ Symposium, organized on the theme ‘Bridging the Gap:  Towards Realizing Sustainable Development Goals 2030’. Held on 17th and 18th January, 2019, it entailed an array of non-competitive, competitive, online and interactive events. Econvista saw participation in huge numbers from various local, national as well as international colleges and proved to be intellectually stimulating.
  • Annual Conference of the Department of English entitled ‘Faultlines: Indian Experiences of Conflict and Transformations’. Held on 28th and 29th of Jaunary 2019. Aimed at engaging with the different forms of conflict that exist on a social and political level, and to explore the various ways in which they manifest, and are represented. Events organized included an art exhibition, a photo exhibition, a Dalit Panthers Archival exhibition and several thought provoking panel discussions.
  • ALETHEIA: The Department of Philosophy’s Academic Meet, ALETHEIA. Organized on 11th of February 2019. A range of talks, group discussions, competitions and other activities were organized. Each activity saw enthusiastic participation of a large number of students and teachers from within and outside the Department. More than 180 students from various Delhi NCR Colleges also came in as participants.
  • Annual Academic Meet of the Department of Psychology was organized on 1 and 2 of March, 2019 with the theme Psychotech: Exploring the Ever-Expanding Frontiers of the Human Mind. Events organized included a keynote address by Dr. Sumitava Mukherjee and a national paper presentation competition that had a number of entries from various colleges from across the nation.
  • SAMAGAM: Annual Academic Meet of the Department of B. A. Programme. Organized on 8th and 9th of March, 2019 on the theme ‘Tales of Telulurians: Cultural Enquiries’ and revolved around the impact of the ever changing culture. Various speaker sessions, panel discussions, competitions were conducted that attracted students from LSR and other colleges as well.
  • MAAZI-O-MUSTAQBIL: The Department of History’s Annual Academic Meet. Held on the 8th and 9th of March, on the theme ‘Deconstructing ‘Vernaculars’: Complexities of Resistance and Identity Formations’. Explored the dynamics of assertions and negotiations of the vernacular identity. Through the carefully curated talks, panel discussions, screenings and presentations, an attempt was made to sift through the realities of formation, colonization and resistance of vernaculars; and locate these processes in the larger historical framework.
  • SEHAR: Annual Academic Meet of the Department of Elementary Education organised on March 15th, 2019, on the theme ‘Attaining literacy through stories’. The keynote address was delivered by Dr. Meenakshi Khar, Associate Professor, NCERT, followed by a panel discussion on the same theme. Mr. D. V. Kumar of National Book Trust conducted a workshop on Story Writing, which prompted some students to send their entries for the Children’s Magazine, published by NBT. The day concluded with a Story Telling session by Ms. Ruma Ghosh and Dr. Ashish Ghosh.
  • MOMENTS: The Department of Statistics’ Annual Academic Meet. Held on February 15, 2019 saw participation of over 500+ students from all across Delhi NCR and nearby regions. The meet focused on different arenas like finance, business, programming, statistics and several others.
  • POLPOURRI: Annual Academic Meet of the Department of Political Science. Organized on 15th March 2019, the meet was a one day academic meet preceded by two events. The theme for the meet was ‘Our Politics, Our Selves?’, wherein the students sought to understand the construction of self, as an ongoing and fluid process, that constitute, determine and cultivate individual identity.
  • VAGARTH: Annual Academic Meet of the Department of Hindi. Organized in March 2019. Students presented a group song based on the songs by the legendary poet Suryakant Tripathi Nirala and a ‘Kaavyagoshthi’ was also organised in which poems by renowned poets were recited. An Excerpt Reading from selected works of eminent authors like Amrita Pritam, Premchand, Yashpal, Bhishma Sahni, Jainendra, Dharmveer Bharti, Maietreyi Pushpa, Mridula Garg and Krishna Sobti was also organised.
  • SAMSKRITI : Annual Academic Meet of the Department of Sanskrit. Organized in March and was a one of its kind ‘SANSKRIT MUN’. Topic of deliberation was ‘संस्कृत, संस्कृति एवं विश्व’ -Sanskrit, Culture and World. Students from various colleges participated in this event. The delegates represented various countries such as USA, Germany, France, Britain, Canada and India and explored various aspects of Sanskrit in relation with art, culture, study and research, classical languages vis-a-vis their allotted country.
  • KULA: Annual Academic meet of the Department of Sociology. Held on the 28th and 29th of March on the theme “Histories and Memories”. KULA turned the sociological gaze on the social significance of memories, role of archives and processes of making histories. Events organized included an exhibition – ‘Quaterpiece’ – which attempted to represent the material  memories and tried to remember all acts of resistance that have been silenced over the last 25 years.
