Therefore, we should be determined to achieve our goals, inculcate moral values wherever we go and do something for others as well as for the welfare of the society. Thus, the session conducted by NSS-LSR was well liked by all and turned out to be a great learning experience.
SWACCHTA PAKHWADA 2022
The NSS unit of Lady Shri Ram College for Women commemorated the Swachhta Pakhwada Campaign with full zeal and enthusiasm between 1st and 15th September 2022. Under the guidance of principal Dr. Suman Sharma, Program Officer Dr. Jonaki Ghosh and Co-Convener Dr. Tripti Bassi, a host of events and initiatives were organised to highlight the importance of cleanliness and sanitation among students and teachers. The aim was to encourage and inspire them to continue with the good practices of hygiene and sanitation in college as well as home. On the morning of 2nd September, a cleanliness drive was initiated by the NSS volunteers in the college premises. The volunteers were divided into groups and were allotted different areas in and around campus. They cleaned the area using brooms and handpicked the dry garbage such as cups, cardboard boxes etc and threw in the dustbins. The event helped to be aware of our surroundings and keep it maintained and clean. It was observed that there was not a lot of garbage in the campus and it really showed and implied the ethics of the college community. On the 7th of September, 50+ volunteers, who pledged their commitment to pursuing and propagating the message of the Swachh Bharat Mission. The Swachhta Shapath (pledge) was recited both in English and Hindi by Dr Jonaki B. Ghosh, Convener of NSS LSR, and Dr Tripti Bassi, Co-Covener of NSS LSR. The volunteers, along with the LSR NSS Union and Ad-com (2022-23), repeated the words after them and swore to “encourage 100 other people to devote at least 100 hours to cleanliness”. Furthermore, a screening was held of the documentary “Swachh Bharat: India’s Sanitation Revolution”. It showcased the making of the Swachh Bharat Mission into a jan aandolan with millions of Indians joining hands to make India clean and beautiful. The documentary screening highlighted how people in rural areas lived before Swachh Bharat Abhiyan started. They lacked access to safe sanitation. This led to open defecation which is a largest health and environmental menace across the world. But all this changed when Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi announced the success of the toilet revolution on the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. Rural India was declared open defecation free (ODF) under the Swachh Bharat Mission which was started in 2014. After the documentary screening, discussion was held about the audience’s views and opinions for the same. The session helped to revisit and acknowledge the importance of safe sanitation practices along with an explanation of the impact caused by the lack of safe sanitation. National Service Scheme Lady Shri Ram College for Women (University of Delhi) NSS-LSR also conducted a quiz on Waste Management: DO NOT (W)HASTE. It gave an excellent opportunity to volunteers not just to participate but also to learn as well as increase one’s environmental awareness. The quiz really helped to know one’s knowledge about waste management along with providing novel information one is not cognizant about. It was very enriching and intriguing for the audience. Simultaneous to all these initiatives, a poster making competition on the topic “do not litter/waste disposal practices” was also held by the NSS team. More than 100 posters were submitted by the volunteers and put up around campus to encourage the student body to not litter around campus, specially near eating junctions. The posters drew a lot of attention towards the cleanliness campaign of NSS, and also the resolve of LSR to participate in the Swacchta Abhiyan. Swachhta or cleanliness forms an integral part of Mahatma Gandhi’s mission to India’s development. For him, sanitation was equally, if not more, important than independence- it is a shared obligation of the individual, community and the State to attain satisfactory sanitation in individual and social life. NSS-LSR is committed to the cause of creating a cleaner India, and continues to promote hygiene and cleanliness practices even after the conclusion of the Swacchta Pakhwada 2022.
Nexus 2023
NSS, under its larger G-20 Programme of awareness sought to highlight the issue of Disability and discussed from 9th to 15th February 2023. ways to deal with it in its week long programme. It was felt that the dominant discourses often portray disability as a “biological” state of being, failing to acknowledge the social and political forces that underlie it. This has been seen throughout history wherein most literature and media narratives portray disability as a product of one’s “inherent” qualities, overlooking the fact that disability is itself a product of the dominant knowledge structures that categorise bodies as “abled” and “disabled”. Keeping this in mind, the panel discussion on the theme “Rethinking Disability as a Socio-Political Construct” aims to bring forth a socio-political perspective to the field and highlight how the state of disability does not emerge out of an inborn quality of persons but is rather a result of the existing infrastructural lacks to accommodate the needs of people. It encourages a conversation about the need to redefine the meanings of disability and to scrutinize not bodily or mental impairments but the social norms that define the category of disability in the first place.
