Course Offered: B.A (Honours) Psychology

The Psychology Department endeavours to prepare students for their professional journeys in the dynamic, diverse and ever-growing field of Psychology. Students learn about the history of the discipline, its theoretical foundations and its numerous branches including Clinical Psychology, Counselling, Child Development, Bio-psychology and Human Resource Management. Emphasis is placed on fostering in students the skills and attitudes needed to be competent and socially sensitive psychologists including a self-reflexive attitude, critical thinking, empathy and a respect for individual differences. The Department encourages an atmosphere of debate and discussion while nurturing in young minds, an appreciation of new and varied perspectives on forces that interact to shape the human psyche.

Given the application based nature of psychology, theoretical papers are accompanied by a variety of robust practicum papers for training students in different forms of assessment and research. Contemporary and classic psychological researches which form the backbone of the discipline are an integral part of classroom interactions. Pedagogical techniques include field visits, case study analyses and extensive use of audio-visual mediums.

Students of the Department go on to successfully pursue various kinds of careers after graduation. Those who enter the fields of counselling and psychotherapy work in settings as varied as schools, clinics, hospitals and non-government organizations. Several former students enjoy gratifying careers in the corporate world while others have moved into realms such as teaching, advertising, media, theatre and law.

  • An enriching workshop on the usage of Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software was conducted with the expert faculty, Dr Pushpita Behera, on 18th August 2022.
  • A Career Guidance session on ‘Clinical Psychology: Prospects and Applications’ with Ms. Sentisungla Longchar, Assistant Professor, Department of Psychology at LSR. The session took place on 26th August 2022.
  • An engaging session on ‘Psychology, Power and Constructs of Gender Laws’ with Dr Nancy Pathak, assistant professor at LSR, as the guest speaker was conducted on 25th August 2022, that aimed at addressing the topics of longstanding concern within the field of gender and politics and at guiding the students to employ a researchbased view to the study of Psychology, power & the constructs of gender laws.
  • The Research Circle organised an intellectually stimulating and comprehensive session on the ‘Tapestry of Humanity – Research in Multiculturalism’ with Dr. Shernaz Cama, Assistant Professor at the Department of English, LSR on 1st September 2022.
  • An informative speaker session on the ‘Nature of Historical Knowledge’ with Dr. Pankaj Jha, an Associate Professor of History at LSR, was conducted on 8th September 2022.
  • The Department organised an engaging online session on “Anxiety to Success: A New Paradigm” with Prof. (Dr.) N.K. Chadha, former head of Psychology at North Campus, Delhi University, and Mr. Rakesh Sarin, entrepreneur and global business leader, as the guest speakers on 12th Sept. 2022, that aimed at helping the students to channelise their emotions and at guiding them to employ a fresh perspective on viewing and handling anxiety successfully.
  • The Books, Documentaries and Media Team of Department organized an intriguing session – ‘A Closet of Personalities’ on the movie “Split” with Dr. Esha Mehta, a counselling psychologist and Clinical Hypnotherapist on 15 September 2022.
  • An enriching session on ‘Career Prospects in Cognitive Science’ with Ms. Nitika Verma, an alumna of the department and a second-year student pursuing MSc in Cognitive Science from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, was oranized as the guest speaker on 22nd September 2022.
  • The Research Circle of the Department organised an engaging two-day workshop on Thematic Apperception Test (TAT), a widely used projective technique, with Ms. Sentisungla Longchar, Assistant Professor, Department of Psychology at LSR, as the guest speaker on 29th and 30th September 2022, that aimed at guiding the students in administering and interpreting the Thematic Apperception Test.

Other Association Highlights

  • The Department of Psychology organized an intellectually stimulating and interactive National Paper Presentation Competition in collaboration with the IQAC on the 14th of October, 2022, which was conducted after two long years in physical mode. The esteemed and experienced dignitaries who had chosen to grace the occasion as the judges for the event were- Dr Anisha Juneja, Dr. Priti Dhawan and Dr. Bhawana Devi. About 50 enthralled students of the college psychology department were in attendance for the session.
  • The Research Circle of the Department, hosted its esteemed Annual National Seminar On Psychological Research on 2 nd November, 2023. The flagship event, conducted in collaboration with IQAC-LSR, in a hybrid mode provided an enriching platform for aspiring and experienced researchers alike to exchange innovative ideas and skills pertaining to psychological research. The esteemed panel of judges included Dr. Harpreet Bhatia and Dr. Priti Dhawan.

Mental Health Awareness Week (MHAW)

  • For over a decade, the Department of Psychology at Lady Shri Ram College for Women in New Delhi, India, has been relentlessly supporting and significantly endorsing the objective of World Mental Health Day every year by celebrating this day as an awareness week i.e., ‘Mental Health Awareness Week’ (MHAW) in alignment with the global theme of the World Mental Health Day each year.
  • In the year, 2022 MHAW was observed on the theme titled, “Where The Light Enters You: Journeying into Healing Invisible Wounds” that has been sewn up in alignment with World Mental Health 2022 theme i.e., “Make mental health for all a global priority” after much deliberations by the department association including the student body. Throughout the two weeks, inclusive of the MHAW initiative, the department organized events and activities such as lectures, seminars, workshops, exhibiitions, online and offline campaings revolving around the theme.
  • In 2023, the deaprtment observed the Mental Health Awareness Training week from 9th-13th October, 2023 which entailed a plethora of activities and insightful sessions, centered around the theme of “Mindshift:Explore, Evolve, Empower”. The week culminated with an insightful lecture on the theme by the keynote speaker honourable Dr. Aruna Broota.

Annual Academic Meet

  • An informative workshop on the usage of Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software was conducted with the expert faculty, Dr Pushpita Behera, on 17th November, 2022, which was aimed at introducing the basics of the software for data analysis.
  • A speaker session was held by the Books, Documentaries, and Media Team of the Psychology Department featuring Dr. Snehil Kacker, a professor of political science at Lady Shri Ram College for Women, on the topic of “Stories of War Through Different Perspectives,” held on February 2nd, 2023, where students discussed and understood more about war and conflict, what causes it, sustains it, and what it affects.
  • A insightful session titled “Understanding and Navigating Ethics in the Therapy Room” was held on the 2nd of March, 2023, featuring Ms. Sonakshi Gandhi, who is a licensed clinical psychologist and founder of the Mind Garden.
  • The Research Circle of the Department, organized a session on ‘Embarking on International Research Journeys: A Roadmap for Psychology Students’ with Ms. Nainika Hira, LSR alumnus and Research Assistant at UCLA, Purdue and IIM, on 22nd August, 2023.
  • An enlightening workshop on Suicide Prevention was conducted by the department on 14 September, 2023 hosting Ms. Devika Khanna, a seasoned counseling psychologist and a certified QPR Gatekeeper Trainer with extensive experience in mental health and suicide prevention, with the aim of raising awareness and cultivating a compassionate culture for suicide prevention and intervention.
  • The Department of Psychology at Lady Shri Ram College for Women conducted a Workshop on “Setting up for Therapy: Providing insights beyond textbooks to prepare students for the field of therapy”, featuring Ms. Dakshita Sabarwal, an almuna of LSR and a practicing clinical psychologist, which provided students, with practical guidance and motivation to explore and empower themselves in the field of therapy, bursting many myths and misconceptions about therapy, and ways to overcome it.
  • The Research Circle of the Department conducted an online session titled “The Art of Presenting a Paper” on 28th October, 2023 hosting Dr. Megha Dhillon as the speaker.
  • An informative speaker session titled the ‘Critical Analysis of Mental Health Discourse with special emphasis on Trauma’ featuring Dr. Ayurdhi Dhar, an esteemed professor of Psychology at University of West Georgia and author of the book ‘Madness and Subjectivity’ was organized on 19th October 2023. The session educated the audience about the need to look at the discipline of Psychology from multiple lenses and reignite the spirit of skepticism in the discipline.
  • An engaging online session on ‘Contemporary Issues and Case Studies in the Field of HRM’ was conducted with Dr Kanika K. Ahuja, Professor of Psychology at LSR and the Faculty Advisor of the Placement Cell, as the guest speaker, on 30th November 2023.
  • In an enlightening session, conducted by the department, Dr. Jaya Sukul, a seasoned clinical psychologist with over 12 years of experience and an alumna of LSR, shared valuable insights with students, which was valuable in guiding students regarding the field as a career option.
  • India launched ‘Viksit Bharat @2047: Voice of Youth’ on Dec 11, 2023, aiming to achieve developed country status by its centenary. Led by PM Narendra Modi, it focuses on economic growth, social progress, environmental sustainability, and good governance, with youth taking a central role. The Department actively participated to raise awareness about the initiative. On 31 January, 2024 a speaker session was organised with Dr Megha Dhillon, titled “Psychological Understanding of Geetopdesh in realm of Nation Building”; and on the next day, 01 February, 2024, an art competition was held in the Psychology Department on the theme ‘Brushstrokes of Changing India: Unleashing your Visionary Palette’. Both the events inspired the students to be a part of the efforts to make India a developed and prosperous country.

The Learning Curve is the National Journal of the Department of Psychology, Lady Shri Ram College for Women. It is a peer-reviewed annual academic journal accredited with an International Standard Serial Number (ISSN 2321-7057).

Established in 2012, the journal comprises a reputed editorial advisory board as well as expert reviewers. In the past, the journal has received papers from researchers within and outside India, having varying professional backgrounds but a shared zeal for research. Continuing the tradition, The Learning Curve annually invites students, researchers, graduates, postgraduates and working professionals to submit their conceptual, theoretical and empirical investigations pertaining to Psychology and affiliated fields. At present, the journal has published nine volumes.

The Learning Curve aims to provide a dynamic platform for researchers to present their research work that brings out a novel and significant perspective of looking at psychological issues of concern. It hopes that the papers in the journal will take the field of psychology in unexplored directions and unchartered terrains.
