Department Of Journalism

The Journalism Programme of Lady Shri Ram College is designed to give women an effective voice in the world of media. We believe that this voice will reflect the genuine development needs of all sections of a society in transition such as ours. In a democratic society, the exercise of the freedom of expression comes with enormous responsibilities, and the media plays a crucial, decisive role. Our attempt here is to train professionals, who are sensitive to the demands of this role, and who, in the pursuit of truth are alive to its many dimensions.

We see journalists both as transcribers of the aspirations of society and as catalysts of change. We wish to equip our students for the demands and rigours of the profession along with a commitment to accuracy, fairness, and knowledge. We seek to enliven them with that sense of vocation which empowers them to extend themselves beyond careerism to causes that need support, to ideas that need expression, and to the spirit that cherishes and values freedom.

The teaching methodology incorporates lectures, workshops, and seminars, and emphasizes independent projects and extensive written assignments. It is our attempt at LSR to imbibe the teaching-learning process with the kind of sensitivity that reconciles excellence with humanity, a pedagogy that can break free of rhetoric, shatter myths and rescue imagination and intuition using them as resources to conceive and initiate change. To do this we provide for our students a diverse faculty drawn from the ranks of academics and practitioners and conduct seminars and workshops by practitioners. Our students attend film screenings and documentary festivals as well as seminars and conferences on the media to expand their horizon of experiences and to expose them to a plethora of views. We take pride in fostering our students with ambition, motivation and above all the will to make a difference.

The Department of Journalism, Lady Shri Ram College had an enriching and eventful academic year filled with engaging activities and collaborations.

The Department Annual Academic Meet, Juxtapose 2025, explored the expansive and evolving theme of the “Media Multiverse.” The event featured distinguished speakers, including Professor Velislava Hillman from the London School of Economics, who delivered an insightful online talk on the rise of the digital learner and the integration of AI in education. Another notable online session featured marketing strategist Saheli Chatterjee, who provided an in-depth analysis of the booming creator economy and the importance of building a personal brand in today’s media landscape.

The event also included panel discussions focusing on the rapidly changing formats of storytelling in an increasingly digital world dominated by chatbots, misinformation, and short attention spans. These discussions encouraged critical reflections on how traditional media is adapting to the digital age and the challenges posed by emerging technologies.

Throughout the year, the department continued to curate events that encouraged critical reflection on contemporary issues. As part of Media Literacy Week, the department partnered with Project Vidya, NSS LSR to organize a fun, interactive quiz titled “From Ink to Internet: A Media Literacy Quiz.” It aimed to challenge popular misconceptions surrounding media consumption and encourage students to critically evaluate the sources and accuracy of the information they encounter daily.

A major milestone for the department was the launch of the first issue of the department newsletter, ‘The Fourth Estate’. It served as a platform for students to voice their opinions, showcase their journalistic work, and reflect on the achievements and activities within the department.

The department, in collaboration with the North East Cell of LSR, hosted an insightful session titled “From Margins to Centre: Media Representation of North East India in Mainstream Discourse.” The session featured renowned journalist Miss Sangeeta Barooah Pisharoty, who shared her experiences and insights into the often underrepresented narratives surrounding North East India in mainstream media. Various other lectures by media professionals such as Dr. Archana Kumari and Ambarish Saxena were frequently held to enrich student engagement.

Several educational visits were undertaken to provide students with real-world media exposure. Students visited the Delhi School of Journalism for a workshop on audio-visual production. Led by industry experts Mr. Atul Gautam, Mr. Dipanshu Yadav, and Mr. Pradeep Kashyap, the workshop gave students hands-on experience in producing audio-visual content, equipping them with essential skills for modern-day newsroom environments. This session was an invaluable opportunity for students to gain practical insights into the technical aspects of journalism and to understand the intricacies of audio-visual storytelling. On 3rd and 4th February 2025, students attended the World Book Fair, where they explored the evolving dynamics of the world of publishing and media. The department also organized an extensive  visit to All India Radio and Doordarshan Bhawan, offering students an exclusive look into the workings of one of India’s leading public broadcasting institutions. This visit provided students with a firsthand understanding of radio as well as broadcast journalism and the challenges of delivering news to a diverse and expansive audience.

Furthermore, the department association organised other activities such as  photography competition on the occasion of World Photography Day, Orientation Programme for the incoming batch of 2027/28, and multiple reading circles to foster critical and interdisciplinary learnings amongst the student body. These included discussions on ‘B.R Ambedkar’s Canon of Journalism’, ‘Voices Amidst the Battleground: Understanding War’s Impact Through Literature and Media’, amongst many others.

The Annual Publication of the Department of Journalism, ‘Counter Talk 2024’ invited submissions on the theme of ‘Matrix of Truth: Journalism in the 21st Century’.

The Fourth Estate, the department’s newsletter, released its inaugural issue in November 2024.
