BA Program with Computer Science

Computer Science primarily revolves around problem-solving, a fundamental skill that extends beyond academics into everyday life. The discipline focuses on the design, development, and analysis of software solutions to address challenges across business, scientific, and social domains. The Department of Computer Science offers DSC and DSE papers for BA Programme students pursuing Computer Science as a Major or Minor, along with GE papers for Honours students, supported by well-equipped computer laboratories. The department aims to strengthen students’ abilities to design, implement, and evaluate computer-based systems, processes, components, and programs that meet specific requirements. It also strives to create awareness within the college community about cyber security, modern digital tools, web designing, and programming languages.

The department follows interactive and student-centric pedagogical practices, including informal classroom discussions, paper presentations, quizzes, and practical sessions with hands-on learning experiences. Practical exercises are designed around theoretical concepts using relevant software applications, enabling students to explore the dynamic field of computing in depth. Regular practical demonstrations help address students’ queries and clarify concepts effectively. Students are encouraged to think critically, approach real-world situations analytically, and develop solutions to practical problems.

Graduates with Computer Science papers have access to a broad range of career opportunities. These include fields such as academics, research, data analysis, programming, app development, web development, and freelancing. Students may also pursue higher studies in areas like management and MCA, further expanding their professional prospects.

During the academic year, the Department of Computer Science embarked on a mission to provide a comprehensive learning journey for its students. It wasn’t just about classroom lectures but about creating a vibrant environment that nurtured skills, creativity, and camaraderie. One of the cornerstone initiatives was ‘Tech Thursday’, a weekly Instagram post brimming with the latest tech insights and facts, keeping everyone aware of the rapidly evolving tech landscape.

The essence of skill enrichment came through specialized sessions and workshops. Mr. Prasanna Prem took the stage, unravelling the intricacies of Tableau in a session that left students equipped with newfound knowledge. Dr. Priyanka Padhy, with her expertise, led the Research Writing 101 workshop, unlocking the secrets to crafting impeccable research papers—a vital skill in academia and beyond. In the spirit of fostering teamwork and igniting creativity, a Halloween-themed team bonding session was organized with hilarious and witty games.

The Viksit Bharat campaign brought forth a digital poster-making competition, merging technology with artistic expression. The department collaborated with college’s NSS chapter and Expressions- the creative writing society. This brought about an AI-themed competition on the occasion of Nexus, and an Article Writing competition showcasing the diverse talents within the department. Amidst these activities, Teachers’ Day stood as a testament to the impact of the dedicated faculty members, celebrated with heartfelt gratitude and admiration.

Euphoria, the two-day annual meet was themed ‘Decode the Unknown: Innovate, Create, Transcend’ and was a big success. The journey to Euphoria was paved with engaging pre-events designed to ignite minds and foster camaraderie. ‘CTRL+ALT+RUN’ and ‘Dhundo Tho Jane’ challenged students with campus races and problem-solving quests, testing their resourcefulness. The grand spectacle kicked off with a captivating speaker session led by Wing Commander Anurag Chandra, Deputy Director of the Indian Air Force, delving into the realm of ‘Ethical Considerations in AI and Cybersecurity’. His insights illuminated the ethical dimensions of AI in the context of cybersecurity, emphasizing the need for ethical frameworks. The day ended with the fierce Terrabytes Competition, where students seamlessly integrated cutting-edge technology with Sustainable Development Goals. The following day commenced with the Power BI workshop conducted by Utkarsh Sharma, a Power BI admin at American Express, delving deep into the art of data visualization and analysis. The crescendo of Euphoria was marked by the Excel Expedition Competition, a thrilling showcase of analytical mastery, where participants navigated complex datasets with finesse and creativity.

The department’s commitment to knowledge dissemination shone brightly throughout the year with the publication of three enlightening newsletters and the annual magazine. These acted as beacons, showcasing the profound influence of technology on our lives and society at large. The academic year wasn’t just a series of events; it was a symphony of learning and community, painting a vibrant picture of a department committed to the holistic development of its students.
