National Service Scheme (NSS)

The National Service Scheme (NSS) is a community service programme with the objective of building social consciousness in students. NSS provides an opportunity to students in the capacity of volunteers to venture out of their comfort zones and make a difference to society. Inspired by this philosophy, the curriculum of the NSS chapter of Lady Shri Ram College, which was set up in 1968, comprises a gamut of events and activities undertaken by volunteers who have channelized their creativity and spirit of volunteerism to bring about meaningful change.

Apart from being a part of activities launched by Delhi University NSS, we, at LSR have undertaken numerous projects that focus on a broad spectrum of issues in different social spheres which include education for underprivileged children, caring for the elderly, intervention techniques for the differently-abled, working with animal shelters and health centres associated with patients suffering from AIDS and Cancers of various kinds, social entrepreneurship and women empowerment. Every year more than 700 volunteers work ceaselessly and engage in various issues of social concern.

The NSS programme endeavours to sensitise the students to various social issues through discussion, debate, talks, seminars, workshops, music, awareness campaigns, street theatre and conferences. NSS-LSR has also had the honour of hosting eminent personalities including, among others, politician and retired police officer Ms. Kiran Bedi, social activist Dr. Suman Aggarwal, Kargil War Veteran Major DP Singh, Animal Rights Activist and esteemed member of parliament Smt. Maneka Gandhi, Virologist Dr. Shahid Jameel and Dr. Gagandeep Kang, and cyber-security expert Mr. Rakshit Tandon. Apart from this, we have worked closely with renowned organisations such as Teach for India and have collaborated on disaster mitigation programmes with JNU and Road safety workshops with Honda.

Additionally, NSS LSR also hosts three annual events including – (i) Kala: a celebration of children’s creativity and innovation through art and craft, (ii) Noor: the NSS Diwali Mela which serves as a platform for our projects, various NGOs and female entrepreneurs to showcase their products and for the student body to rejoice in this celebration of the festival of lights, and (iii) Nexus: a youth convention where young minds deliberate on social issues of present and future concern.

NSS-LSR commenced its new tenure with a rejuvenating yoga workshop themed ‘Yoga for one Earth, one health’ (21 June 2025) led by Yogacharya Gopal Ji with Dr. Aditi Nigam as the facilitator. The workshop created a meaningful space for participants to focus on physical well-being, mindfulness, and inner balance, setting a positive and energising tone for the year ahead. NSS hosted several distinguished speakers, including Lt. General Vinod Bhatia (Retd.), former Director General of Military Operations, on the occasion of Kargil Vijay Diwas (26 July 2025), making the event deeply inspiring and reflective through discussions on courage, patriotism, and service to the nation.

As part of the Swachhta Pakhwada Campaign (17 September to 2 October 2025), NSS organised impactful initiatives such as cleanliness drives, a thought-provoking skit, and a Swachhta pledge to spread awareness on the importance of maintaining clean surroundings and encouraging responsible civic behaviour. Under the Tobacco Free Youth Campaign 3.0 and the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan, NSS conducted a myth-busting session and a slogan writing competition (16 October 2025), which encouraged participants to challenge misconceptions around substance use and promote healthier, more informed lifestyles.

NSS participated in a Unity March and organised a National Unity Pledge to commemorate the legacy of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel (21 November, 2025) reinforcing the ideals of national integration, harmony, and collective responsibility. A special session on ‘Working with children through a trauma-informed lens’, conducted by Humraahi Psychotherapy, introducing participants to child-sensitive and trauma-aware approaches, particularly useful for volunteers working closely with children through NSS initiatives was organized as well (21 November 2025). An important event of the year was the blood donation drive (5 February 2026)  in collaboration with Rotary Blood Bank, preceded by highly engaging pre-events such as a game carnival and a nukkad natak.

Reflecting on the values of compassion and community care, NSS conducted an awareness session on campus stray animals in collaboration with Stray Sathi, led by Manjunath Kamnath (25 March, 2026). The session focused on sensitising participants towards the humane treatment of campus animals, building legal and ethical awareness, and promoting responsible coexistence. On the occasion of Ambedkar Jayanti celebrations (9 April, 2026), NSS organised a pledge ceremony, reaffirming collective commitment to equality, dignity, justice, and constitutional values.

Three annual flagship events – Varshik Samaroh (Threads of kindness, 9 October 2025), Nexus (From me to we: Building community-led change, 6 February 2026), and Kala (Sapno ki udaan – Khushiyon ke rang, 7 February 2026) celebrated the spirit of service, collaboration, leadership, and creativity, garnering an enthusiastic response from participants and attendees. Additionally, NSS celebrated Valentine’s week for animals (7- 11 February, 2026), reflecting the importance of empathy, kindness, and welfare-oriented initiatives.

Throughout the tenure, all 27 NSS-LSR projects remained active and hosted insightful sessions, ensuring sustained engagement, meaningful outreach, and continued commitment towards social impact, community building, and holistic student involvement across diverse thematic areas.
