Department Of Statistics

Course Offered: B.Sc. (H) Statistics

The Bachelors of Science (B.Sc.) Course of the Department of Statistics is an exciting space to engage with the quantitative aspects of the social, biological and physical sciences. Focusing on the increasing role of Statistics in diverse areas and its indispensability in marketing, finance and strategy-making, students are trained to acquire tools in the areas of applied statistics, statistical methods and analysis. They engage with sample surveys, econometrics, biostatistics and operations research. In this course, students are taught rigorous methods, tools and techniques to sift through a maze of data and comment on it in an informed manner. The emphasis of the teaching-learning process is on relating statistical concepts to real world ideas that are familiar to the students. To validate the theoretical concepts developed in the classrooms, students are asked to perform a requisite number of practicals in different fields of Statistics. In addition, students also conduct practicals based on the computer language C and software packages like Excel, Word and Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS).

In addition, a dedicated team of faculty members and enthusiastic students regularly organize workshops and paper presentations for intellectual enrichment and engagement with the world of work. Talks, panel discussions and interactive sessions with experts are a regular feature at the Department on themes such as careers in statistics, use of statistics in the formulation of economic policies and Stochastic Modelling. Eminent visitors to the department have included Prof. Chand Midha, Head of the department, University of Akron,U.S.A., Prof. K.R. Parathasarthy from the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) and eminent professor from ISI, Prof. B. Majumdar. Fields trips are also organised. The department organised an educational trip to the National Academy of Statistical Administration (NASA), Greater NOIDA. NASA functions under the overall guidance of the nation’s premier statistical organisation – the Central Statistics Office (CSO). Another educational trip was organised to the Huber-Suhner plant in Manesar. This visit helped students gain an insight into the various aspects of Statistical Quality Control.

The department has been holding its Annual Meet Moments since 1995 with the aim of introducing students to the importance of organisational abilities. Participation by students from other disciplines is encouraged. Moments has emerged as a popular and eagerly awaited event and involves activities such as crosswords, quizzes and pictionary. Public speaking and theatre based activities are also conducted.

Various career options available to students after graduation include working on quality control for industries, biotechnology, market research, corporate planning, banking, trade, medicine, defence, consultation, analysts, data analysis and data science.

The annual department meet Momemts was a huge success this year. Its theme was ‘Infinite Inferences: Exploring the Statistical Multiverse’. Two events were organised as lead up that included games like paper dance, imposter challenge and an official banner reveal. There was a panel discussion where renowned experts, Mr. Rohit Gulati, Ms. Namita Tiwari, Mr. Samir Bhandari, Ms. Priyansha Saluja joined along with chief guest Dr. GP Samanta, Chief Statistician of India. Other events such as Nerdflix 2.0, Market Maestro Meetup, Find-your-Surway, Game of Trades, Brand Aid 7.0 were also organised. This year there were 3000+ registrations for the events, participation from ambassadors representing 35+ college societies, collaborations with top companies as knowledge partners, and a social media reach of 1 lakh+.

The department organised several lectures and talks over the year on topics such as ‘Research Careers & Higher Studies in Applied Statistics’, ‘How to Crack Master’s Abroad (MIT & LSE)’, ‘How to Prepare for MSc Courses at IIT’, ‘Internship Bootcamp Session’. For Viksit Bharat @2047 the department organised a poster making competition ‘Vikassheel se Viksit Bharat ki Or’, and a held a group discussion on ‘Vision of Developed India: A Reality Check’, in February 2024.

Statistics Week was organised in October which highlighted the importance of data analysis through various activities like ‘Stat-a-thon’ relay race, where teams tackled logical reasoning and statistics questions. An offline session on India’s official statistical system was led by Ms. Neeraj Kumari. ‘Guesstimate’ a solving competition, with Alpha Consulting Club, was judged by Anshika Sachdev. An online group discussion with Thought Showers club, for which the topic was ‘Statistics and Reality: Is Data a Window or Mirror’. A Live Excel workshop with Delta, focused on practical applications of Excel functions, pivot tables, and charts.

The Thought Showers club hosted a series of engaging events throughout the year, including group discussions on various topics such as overcoming insecurity, the role of data in reality, finding life’s purpose, envisioning a developed India, mental health implications of social media, and the concept of letting go. Additionally, they organised fun sessions featuring activities like ‘What’s in a picture’ and story framing. These events provided students with a platform to share their opinions and engage in meaningful conversations on current affairs, career, economy, and national issues.

Alpha – The Consulting Club aims to facilitate students’ entry into the field of consultancy, and organised Brand Aid 7.0 during Moments 2024, attracting over 1000 registrations. The events included introductory and advanced case sessions, sessions on cracking case competitions, CV building workshops, discussions on pursuing masters abroad, and a guesstimate solving competition. ‘Brand-Aid 7.0’, served as the flagship event.

Delta organised a series of events and workshops aimed at enhancing members’ skills in data analysis and professional development. Activities included Excel project sessions, data visualization workshops, article writing projects, group discussions, and expert sessions on topics such as GMAT preparation, and data analyst roles. Additionally, recruitment drives for specialized teams were conducted to manage various responsibilities within the Cell.

The Department of Statistics disseminated numerous copies of its newsletter, Degrees of Freedom during the year. The newsletter showcased the tenacity and ardour of the students through its compelling columns and also provided a sneak peek into the array of events that transpired throughout the term.

It is said that beautiful memories and the influence of a good teacher can never be erased. As a small token of love and appreciation for all the big things that they do, the students of the department of statistics organised a very special teachers’ day celebration. We welcomed our teachers into an otherwise drab, but presently decorated classroom with lots of cheering and enthusiasm. We engaged them with games like “adlabadli “, “English hinglish” and “memory check” and stunning performances prepared by the students. The perfomances got us grooving and the games gave us a great laugh. The celebration ended with us being addressed with heartfelt words and a cake cutting ceremony. Yes, we did have fun organizing and participating but, the best part of it was to see the smiles we were able to bring on the teachers faces.
