Course Offered: B.Sc. (H) Statistics
The Bachelors of Science (B.Sc.) Course of the Department of Statistics is an exciting space to engage with the quantitative aspects of the social, biological and physical sciences. Focusing on the increasing role of Statistics in diverse areas and its indispensability in marketing, finance and strategy-making, students are trained to acquire tools in the areas of applied statistics, statistical methods and analysis. They engage with sample surveys, econometrics, biostatistics and operations research. In this course, students are taught rigorous methods, tools and techniques to sift through a maze of data and comment on it in an informed manner. The emphasis of the teaching-learning process is on relating statistical concepts to real world ideas that are familiar to the students. To validate the theoretical concepts developed in the classrooms, students are asked to perform a requisite number of practicals in different fields of Statistics. In addition, students also conduct practicals based on the computer language C and software packages like Excel, Word and Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS).
In addition, a dedicated team of faculty members and enthusiastic students regularly organize workshops and paper presentations for intellectual enrichment and engagement with the world of work. Talks, panel discussions and interactive sessions with experts are a regular feature at the Department on themes such as careers in statistics, use of statistics in the formulation of economic policies and Stochastic Modelling. Eminent visitors to the department have included Prof. Chand Midha, Head of the department, University of Akron,U.S.A., Prof. K.R. The Thought Showers club hosted a series of engaging events throughout the year, including group discussions on various topics such as overcoming insecurity, the role of data in reality, finding life’s purpose, envisioning a developed India, mental health implications of social media, and the concept of letting go. Additionally, they organised fun sessions featuring activities like ‘What’s in a picture’ and story framing. These events provided students with a platform to share their opinions and engage in meaningful conversations on current affairs, career, economy, and national issues.
Alpha – The Consulting Club aims to facilitate students’ entry into the field of consultancy, and organised Brand Aid 7.0 during Moments 2024, attracting over 1000 registrations. We welcomed our teachers into an otherwise drab, but presently decorated classroom with lots of cheering and enthusiasm. The perfomances got us grooving and the games gave us a great laugh. The celebration ended with us being addressed with heartfelt words and a cake cutting ceremony.
