The Department of English has been proactive in its efforts to engage students actively in a plethora of activities ranging from speaker sessions, research methodology workshop and publishing department journal to name a few. These were conducted to motivate students to participate, explore and learn about contemporary topics by active engagement and interaction with experts in concerned areas providing a creative environment to enhance their knowledge.

The Department of English at Lady Shri Ram College for Women hosted Litmus 2025, its annual international academic conference, from 24th to 26th March 2025. This year’s theme, “Framing the Margins: Media and the Construction of Voice and Identity,” brought together a dynamic range of scholars, professors, and students to interrogate how media shapes, silences, and amplifies marginalised identities. Across three intellectually vibrant days, the conference invited attendees to critically engage with questions of visibility, voice, and the politics of representation in both traditional and digital media.

One of the key highlights of the conference was a thought-provoking panel discussion featuring Prof. Raj Kumar, Mr. Gautam Vegda, and Ms. Meena Kotwal. Together, they explored how caste, marginality, and under-representation continue to inform and shape Indian media narratives—both in mainstream spaces and on the fringes. The conversation examined how media can serve as both a tool of erasure and a platform for resistance.

On the second day, Prof. Ian Almond from Georgetown University in Qatar led an insightful session on global patterns of marginalisation in literary and cultural narratives, challenging the audience to rethink the geographical boundaries of critical thought. The third day featured a special session with Ms. Manisha Pande, Managing Editor at Newslaundry, who reflected on the challenges and possibilities of independent journalism, particularly in creating space for dissent and alternative narratives.

The conference also included sessions that investigated the relationship between digital platforms and marginalised identities, the symbolic politics of the body, and how historical injustices continue to haunt contemporary representations. The three days concluded with a powerful theatrical production by the college’s dramatics society, offering a creative interpretation of the conference’s core concerns.

Leading up to Litmus, the department organised two Pre-Litmus events to foster early academic engagement. On 6th March 2025, Jabberwock, the Department’s Journal and Online Magazine, hosted a paper presentation competition on the theme, “Performing the Masculine and Feminine: The Aesthetic of Stage and Screen.” The event was judged by Dr. Madhu Grover, Dr. Sridhi Dash, and Dr. Twinkle Siwach, and featured critical explorations of gender in performance. On 7th March 2025, a second paper pre-event was held on the theme “Margins as Method,” where papers examined the significance of marginal identities and how they offer new ways of thinking about media and literature.

Jabberwock is the Academic Journal and Magazine of the Department of English. The online and creative wing of Jabberwock published 3 monthly issues, one column, and four reviews by the magazine’s writers and the department’s student body. Jabberwock Academic invited papers and creative pieces for general submissions and theme-specific submissions on the theme ‘Gender as a Performance.’ The department journal also conducted a reading circle on Audre Lorde’s essay ‘The Master’s tools will not dismantle the Master’s House.’
