Principal’s Message

Greetings from the Principal, Lady Shri Ram College for Women. LSR is a premier educational institution of the University of Delhi with the exemplary mission to nurture young women who are equipped to achieve success in a rapidly changing, deeply inter-connected world. LSR was established by the late Sir Shri Ram in the memory of his wife in 1956. Sir Shri Ram was a visionary and philanthropist who saw education as imperative to augmenting India’s growth as a modern nation. We have come a long way from those early years.

Today, the LSR community is a leading place for women to emerge as ‘sheroes’ of the world. Be it academics, extra curricular or co-curricular activities, LSR has proven itself time and again. We have ranked among the top 5, in the country-wide NIRF rankings. We have also completed the second cycle of the NAAC accreditation process and been awarded an A++ grade.

Our world-class faculty is trained from some of the best places and update themselves consistently. LSR is a truly global community. Students, in the course of their study, come across several outreach programmes that give them access to transform lives and the world around them. LSR has infrastructure that is world class as well. We have ICT-enabled classrooms, state-of-theart seminar halls, open space and common rooms. We partake in multiple outreach programmes, international exchange programmes and initiatives. This year the Hon’ble Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Ms. Catherine Colonna, in her first visit to India, was welcomed by the Office of International Programmes. She was accompanied by the Ambassador of France Emmanuel Lenain and other dignitaries from the French Embassy. The event was covered by several important media outlets.

LSR also hosted a delegation from the University of Queensland, Australia. The visiting group was led by Professor Deborah Terry AO, President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Queensland. UQ ranks among the world’s topmost Universities. We signed a Memorandum of Understanding with La Trobe University on 2nd March 2023. The event was witnessed by Minister of Education, Hon. Dharmendra Pradhan and his counterpart Australian Education Minister, Hon. Jason Clare MP, to cement strategically important partnerships with universities, research centres, and industry partners in India.

We have continued to hold numerous workshops and sessions. IQAC LSR organised an online certificate course titled ‘Vidhi Gyaan’ in collaboration with the Delhi State Legal Services Authority with the aim to orient students with the legal framework of the country. This course involved fields visits to Patiala House Courts Complex and the Chittaranjan Park police station. The Department of Economics under the aegis of the IQAC organized a guest lecture by Ms. Nandita Bakhshi who is currently serving as the President and CEO of Bank of West, a BNP Paribus company. In addition the Department of Elementary Education organised a a two-day National seminar titled ‘National Education Policy 2020: Themes and Perspectives’, sponsored by the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR). The seminar was inaugurated by Ms. Alice Vaz R., Principal Secretary, Higher
Education, GNCT.

The Library organized a variety of exhibitions this year highlighting several themes and topics. I would like to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of the Library Staff for making all of this possible. Our student societies are an integral part of LSR’s excellence. Our department associations, societies and students make this campus a dynamic, lively and creative place all around the year. LSR has active and energetic NSO (National Sports Organization) and NCC (National Cadet Corps) units with essential infrastructure and dedicated staff members. Our students have bagged numerous gold medals in many competitions.

LSR students constantly engage with larger social causes. The activities of the NSS unit reflect this spirit. This year NSS LSR celebrated their annual art festival- Kala- offering a platform for children from beneficiary NGOs to showcase their creativity. The theme for Kala 2023 was “Kudrat aur Kala.” Other important events of the year included the celebration of Tarang, our annual cultural festival and the Dr. Bharat Ram Sports Meet. LSR also observed the Environmental Week this year.

Students and faculty organized exhibitions and art installations which highlighted various environmental concerns. These initiatives were well appreciated by the University of Delhi team which visited the college. I am happy to share that LSR won the Green Cup once again this year. We are indeed proud of our lush green lawns. I want to express my gratitude to our committed garden staff who work tirelessly to maintain this beautiful campus. Our commitment to sustainable development is well reflected in our energetic pursuit of the Recycle and Reuse policy. Our innovative practices and initiatives result in wide coverage of LSR by local and national media.

The Placement Season was unprecedented this year and we witnessed the participation of more than 140 companies extending 236 offers to our students. Various industry giants offered positions to our students in a diverse range of fields. The highest package of INR 44.8 LPA (highest in the University of Delhi), was bagged by Janvi Gupta from Commerce Department. I would also like to note with great satisfaction that in line with our commitment to be inclusive and egalitarian, the college offers liberal, need-based free-ship and scholarship programmes. Friends, LSR’s accomplishments have been possible because of my faculty and colleagues who work persistently to create and sustain the ‘magic of LSR’. I would like to mention the immense contribution of our non-teaching staff. I would also like to thank last year’s Students’ Union for their outstanding leadership in the past year. I take this opportunity to welcome our newly elected Students’ Union and wish them all the best for the coming year.

LSR is fortunate to have a generous and visionary Chairperson in Mr. Arun Bharat Ram, whose unwavering support for the college has been crucial in all endeavours. I also would like to express our gratitude to our Board of Governors for their continued support to the college including the initiation of the Dr. Bharat Ram Research Grant Scheme awarded this year to two faculty teams.

I would like to conclude by saying that LSR will strive to remain an enlightened place of learning, where we continue to push boundaries of knowledge, nurture critical enquiry, foster democratic partnerships and build an empowered community. The ‘LSR spirit’ is best captured by these words from the Former President and Visionary Educationist of India, Sh. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan

Greetings from the Principal.

Lady Shri Ram College for Women (LSR), a premier educational institution of the University of Delhi. LSR was established in 1956 by late Sir Shri Ram in memory of his wife. His commitment to the cause of education was not merely philanthropic but was integral to his idea of nation building. Today, LSR has evolved into a gateway to excellence. We not only prove ourselves in academics but also in co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. A look at the many university rank holders across departments as well as the number of awards won at national and international sports and cultural competitionsthe numerous distinguished visitors  as well as the multitude of societies that college is buzzing with bears testimony to the rich tapestry that characterises LSR.

Our record of excellence has been acknowledged repeatedly by assessments made by many independent and reputed surveys. We have been consistently ranked as No. 1 college in India for Liberal Arts and Social Sciences. We are also proud that LSR scored an A+ grade with CGPA of 3.61 awarded by NAAC. It is a matter of pride that NAAC have given us 100% marks for our infrastructure. LSR has climbed to the 2nd position in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) India rankings.  Our students benefit from a robust Placement Cell that works with the individual students throughout the year. Our excellence is recognized by the MHRD that instituted an Institution Innovation Council at Lady Shri Ram College. We are one of the very few non-technical institutions in the country to be granted this recognition.

While our students become global citizens through our numerous international exchange programmes or by securing admission in the best universities in the world, we are equally focused on rooting them in their social contexts. The students participate in many outreach programmes that allows them to transform lives around them. REACH, an acronym for Reaffirming Equity, Access, Capacity and Humanism, is an initiative that acts as the equal opportunity cell of the college. It provides an inclusive platform and enhances the strength and capabilities of students coming from diverse backgrounds.

Like the rest of the Nation, LSR has faced the formidable challenge of the Covid -19 pandemic. It has brought to the fore the need for online education. The College has taken all possible steps to ensure that this transition is a smooth one for the faculty as well as students. At this time the faculty has endeavoured to adapt their pedagogy to the online mode and remain connected with students even during a time of social distancing. Teaching-Learning is at the core of the institutional ethos. We follow a student-centric approach. Teachers are trained as empowered agents to bring social change. The off line and virtual classrooms are looked upon as a site of engaged learning, reflective action and participatory pedagogy. The College has focussed on digital inclusivity and sought to provide support to students in need of financial assistance through the provision of data cards and laptops. LSR stands for Leadership with Social Responsibility. As an example of our commitment to social responsibility, LSR offers very liberal, need-based free-ship and scholarship programmes. These enable students from diverse socio-economic backgrounds to be part of LSR and their perspectives enrich the classroom. The health of our students remains a priority for college. Hence a doctor and two counsellors are available to students for online consultation.

We also take pride in being an environmentally conscious institution. We follow the cardinal principle of Reduce, Re-use and Recycle. We have been taking several initiatives to reduce our carbon footprint and will continue to do so. We have been getting the Green Shield from Delhi University for the last eighteen years as an acknowledgement of our clean and green campus.

The college, while proud of its past achievements, is marching ahead on its journey to achieve excellence.
