Matribhasha Divas: Celebrating India’s Linguistic Richness

On February 21st,  the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC)-LSR , with the support and guidance of Principal Dr. Suman Sharma celebrated the Matribhasha Divas, honoring the rich linguistic diversity of our country. The event was conducted online on Zoom and it saw over 160 people in attendance. The attendees included students and faculty members from Lady Shri Ram College, Delhi and Aggarwal College, Ballabgarh.

The keynote address was given by Prof. Shashi Prabha Kumar, Dean of Sri Shankaracharya Sanskriti Mahavidyalaya, Madhya Pradesh and was moderated by Dr. Pankaja Ghai and Dr. Sushila Kumari. The address was followed by an open interaction and dialogue with Mrs. Vinita Srivastava, Executive Director (Heritage) at Railway Board, facilitated by Dr Kalyani A. Both the sessions focussed on the importance of the mother tongue ranging from playing a key role in the developmental stages of a person to representing the various cultures of a country. During the next event, faculty members of LSR narrated various quotes, couplets and poems in their respective mother tongues including Dogri, Rajasthani, Tamil, Oriya and Assamese. They also translated the pieces for the audience.

This was followed by a discussion led by Dr. Renu Maheshwari, Assistant Professor, Department of Hindi, Aggarwal College and moderated by Dr. Jonaki Ghosh. The discussion focussed on the beauty of Indian languages and the plethora of careers offered by the study of these languages. The final event was the Student’s Recitation Competition during which 15 students presented poetic pieces in their mother tongues. The event was judged by Dr. Kalyani A., Dr Harsimrat Kaur and Dr Pankaja Ghai. The three best pieces were given prizes. The event was concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Megha Dhillon, Convenor, IQAC.
