The Department of Mathematics is inspired by the belief that numbers are fun. Its pedagogical practices include informal classroom interactions to simulate young minds and create a space for free expressions, paper presentations, quizzes and wallpapers, which enable students to explore the fascinating world of Mathematics. Mathematics holds an important place in the history of humanity and is valuable to the future of all human beings, and this is a belief, that guides the functioning of the department of Mathematics, Lady Shri Ram College for Women. The mission of the department is to inspire, prepare, and empower students to succeed in the ever-changing world.
The department provides an environment conducive to nurturing analytical minds. It is the endeavour of the department to offer a rich mathematical experience wherein students learn to think critically, communicate mathematical concepts effectively, and become lifelong learners. The intention is to promote interdisciplinary learning so that the students develop a wider perspective and equip them with the resources necessary not only for mathematical learning but to enable them to compete with confidence at multiple levels in various fields.
The students at the department of Mathematics, are provided with holistic education to empower them to lead from the front. The teachers adopt techniques such as discussions, application based examples, software and power point presentations to encourage the students in exploring the subject. Interactive sessions are conducted before the beginning of a new topic or chapter to enable the students to have in-depth knowledge and practical application of the same is taught in an elaborate manner. Student queries and doubts are tackled through tutorials conducted regularly. The students are encouraged to think out of the box and tackle real life situations.
Students who graduate from the Department have a wide variety of career options to choose from. These include academics, research, civil services, actuarial sciences, data analysis/operations analysis/project development, investment sciences, space dynamics, law, management, banking, defense operations and entrepreneurship.
Departmental Association Activities
The Department of Mathematics at Lady Shri Ram College for Women has come a long way since its inception in 1956. It has always been endeavor of the department to explore the various aspects of Mathematics beyond the confines of syllabi.
The department has organized seminars, workshops, talks by eminent speakers, field trips, inter college annual academic meet, paper presentation, certificate courses, series of workshops, panel discussion, summit and many more. These academic activities provide students with opportunities to hone their mathematical skills. Amongst these, the most notable seminars are The National Seminar on ‘India’s Contribution to Mathematics’, 1972; ‘Mathematics Today’, 1987; two International Seminars in Collaboration with National Board of Higher Mathematics (NBHM) and Department of Mathematics, University of Delhi to commemorate the International year of Mathematics, 2000-01 and ‘Spectrum of Mathematics’, 2006; three days International Seminar ‘From a Life of Mathematics’ in the collaboration with ‘The Mathematical Sciences Foundation’ 2008; two days international seminar on ‘Differential Equations and Mathematical Modeling’, 2010; Science Academics Lecture Workshop on ‘Linear Algebra and its Application’, 2012; Teacher Enrichment Programme ‘RMS-UGTE’ in the association of Ramanujan Mathematical Society. Department also organized Certificate Course on ‘Modelling and Optimization with Spreadsheets’, 2013.
Regularly Eminent speakers are invited from the pioneer institutes of India, abroad and Industry that provides the students a platform to interact and engage with them and enhance their knowledge. The Department’s Annual Academic Meet ‘Enigma’ is one of the most popular events at the inter-college level. ‘Enigma-2018’ was organized on 23rd and 24th of February,2018. Following the opening ceremony, the first event of the academic meet was a panel discussion on ‘Redressing Gender Imbalance in Mathematics: strategies and outcomes’. The panel included a range of academicians from the field of mathematics to history and psychology. The panel discussion was followed by a photography competition, Click-O- Math and a life size real estate based board game, Monopoly. The second day witnessed the ‘Mathematical Summit’, an inter collegiate debating competition formulated on the lines of an MUN conference that discussed the ‘ambit of mathematics: science, humanities or both’ alongside the summit, a combined quiz and treasurer hunt called ‘Sherlocked’ was also conducted. The meet witnessed a plethora of events with participation of 200+ students from various colleges.
Department has been fortunate to have enthusiastic students. Thereby department has started Workshop by Students for the Students. Following are the names of few workshops conducted by the department students: Workshop on Latex, 2016, 2017, 2018; Workshop on Online Poster Designing, 2017; Workshop on the Basics of Photoshop, 2018
The Department of Mathematics organized a three week long certificate workshop on Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) for the students starting from the 10th of October, 2017. The workshop saw enthusiastic participation from the students.
Every year the Mathematics Department organizes ‘Anupama Dua Paper Presentation and Scholarship Function’ where scholarships are awarded to the 3rd year and 2nd year students on the basis of their university performance. A number of papers are presented by the students in this function.
Department has two annual publications, Journal and Newsletter. In keeping with the spirit of research, department publishes a Journal-Éclat. This journal aims at providing a platform for students to publish their ideas along with other mathematical concepts they might encounter. It encourages students to hone their skills in undertaking individual research and writing academic papers. It is an opportunity to go beyond the prescribed limits of the text and to expand their knowledge of the subject. Newsletter- Quantum is published annually and is a joint endeavor of students and faculty. It is an overview of the department activities, experiences of students, mathematical and non-mathematical articles and poems by students
